More than half of 18 to 20 year old in Co Tipperary will go to college, according to figures released by the Higher Education Authority.

The Tipperary figure of 51% is also the national average.

However, a wide social divide has been noted in the figures, with nearly all school leavers in the affluent Dublin 6 postcode expected to go to college, while the figure for an area such as Dublin 17 is just 15%.

The counties where school leavers are the most likely to go on to college include Galway, Mayo and Leitrim at 60%.

Those with the least number of likely college-goers include Laois and Donegal at 41%.
