Irish Water has given sanction to a company to carry out work on the Burncourt and Fethard Water Scheme.

Work on the project had been temporarily suspended after the initial awarding of the contract to Galway company Glan Agua was appealed.

The matter has now been resolved and the company can press ahead with the project which is estimated to cost in the region of €12 million.

The purpose of the water scheme is to bring to an end a boil water notice that has been in effect for around four years for some of the residents of the Fethard Burncourt and Skeheenarinky area due to the presence of cryotosporidum in the water supply.

The news has been welcomed by the Junior Minister at the Department of Agriculture Tom Hayes.
