Turf cutters on 263 of the 322 active turf plots on nine Tipperary National Heritage Area sites will not be required to cease turf cutting.
The announcement was made as the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht published a list of bogs where the ban is to be introduced later this year.
The bogs that will not be required to cease turf cutting include Killeen Bog. Lorrha Bog and Nore Valley Bogs.
The announcement was welcomed by Fine Gael TD Noel Coonan.
