Staffing levels at the Hospital of the Assumption in Thurles needs urgent attention according to Tipperary TD Jackie Cahill.

The Thurles based TD is seeking an exception for the hospital to enable staff to be recruited. The HSE run facility is currently impacted by the HSE ban on recruitment – the HSE says the ban on recruitment is unavoidable as it’s funding from Government is insufficient.

Deputy Cahill revealed that a number of concerned nurses and constituents are expressing concerns about the serious impact the HSE recruitment embargo is having on the long term residential care facility and the threat the ban poses to services. The Fianna Fáil TD has contacted the HSE directly to seek authorisation for the hospital administrator to recruit staff immediately. Deputy Cahill is also seeking a restoration of the day hospital service that was offered in the Hospital of the Assumption pre-Covid but has yet to resume.

Highlighting what he called “significant waiting lists” to gain entry for step-down respite and long-term care at the facility, Deputy Cahill says a reduction in services in Thurles cannot be allowed to take effect.
