As fundraising continues for the Excel Centre in Tipperary town to enable the cinema to reopen participants and sponsors are being sought for a special Climb of the Galty Mor peak in the Galtee mountains.  Sponsorship cards can also be taken by people not undertaking the climb which is set for the evening of Saturday June 15th.  It is understood that technicians were on site at the Excel yesterday however it is not clear when the Excel cinema will reopen. It closed in June 2023 for what was supposed to be a two week period.

The walk is being organised by a committee including Trish O’Brien, Larry Creamer, Joe Lonergan, Brid O’Doherty and the Excel Centre Board Chairperson Elaine Fitzpatrick.  The next training walk  to prepare for the June event is scheduled for Sunday March 24th  at 11am in Bansha Woods. It is intended to walk via trails to Ballough Road on to the Millennium Stone  looping back to the carpark. Walkers are advised to wear boots or other sturdy footwear. A dedicated Facebook page is available at Climb Galteemore for Excel with funds to be used to upgrade the cinema equipment, and the lighting, heating and sound systems in the Simon Ryan Theatre.  The group leading the walk say over the coming weeks they will take walkers on routes in the Ballyhouras and Slievenamon to further develop walkers skills and confidence.
