Newport town in West Tipperary is the latest town to develop a Draft Town Centre First Plan. Council officials and advisors have prepared the plan in line with the new National Policy ‘Town Centre First – A Policy Approach for Irish Towns’.

The plan is focused on regeneration and renewal with a view to strengthening the role, image, vibrancy, vitality and resilience of Newport town Centre. The council says the plan is informed by the valuable input of the local community to create a blueprint for the future development of Newport town.

The Draft Newport Town Centre First Plan will be on public display until Friday 22nd March 2024 at the Newport Community Centre, Clonbealy, Newport, and at the Mulcair Credit Union, Cork Road, Newport.

The plan can also be viewed online and the council is welcoming submissions or observations until Friday March 22nd.   Submissions may be made by post or online at consultations.tipperarycoco.ie

As part of the Government response to dereliction and vacancy the Government has created a new post in each Council called a Town Regeneration Officer – Aine McCarthy is the Tipperary Town Regeneration officer.

Funding of €30,000 is to be allocated to any town with a Town Centre First Plan and yesterday it was confirmed that Roscrea, who published their plan last year is to receive such funding to assist in delivering the plan. For 2024 Carrick on Suir is to be the beneficiary of funding and support from Ms McCarthy to draft a Town Centre First plan.Councils are to receive €10,000 to help establish new Town Teams or build up existing teams.  In addition, a new Town Centre First website at towncentrefirst.ie is now operational to provide information as to how people can get involved in the initiative.
