Almost 5,000 Bus Tickets Issued For Upcoming School Year In County Tipperary So Far

Bus Eireann is continuing to process applications for school transport in the county.

As of the 15 August, 4,899 tickets have been issued to eligible and concessionary pupils in Co. Tipperary. Bus Éireann is currently processing any remaining applications and are reviewing all school transport services. Arising from this review, the company says routes are planned based on the number and location of eligible children who will be availing of school transport for the upcoming school year.

Any application made after 28 April 2023, or any payment/medical card details submitted after 9 June 2023 is deemed late. Where this happens, eligible students are not guaranteed a ticket.

Bus Éireann operates the school transport scheme on behalf of the Department of Education.

Under the terms of the scheme, children are eligible for transport at primary level where they reside not less than 3.2 kilometres from and are attending their nearest national school, and at post-primary level where they reside not less than 4.8 kilometres from and are attending their nearest post primary school/education centre as determined by the Department of Education/Bus Éireann, having regard to ethos and language.

Children who are not eligible for school transport may apply for transport where spare seats are available after eligible children have been accommodated, this is referred to as concessionary transport. Where the number of ineligible children exceeds the number of spare seats available, Bus Éireann allocates tickets for the spare seats using an agreed selection process. Unfortunately, in some cases, pupils are unsuccessful in obtaining a concessionary seat for the school year as demand for places exceeded available capacity on services.
