The Government is inviting applications from projects in two areas of Tipperary as part of the ‘Bioeconomy Demonstration Initiative’ funded by the EU Just Transition Fund.

The aim is to pilot and demonstrate the bioeconomy in action within the Just Transition Fund Territory – in county Tipperary this includes areas near Thurles and Carrick on Suir. The aim is to help support new business in any aspect of the bioeconconmy from research to sales – in the production of food or energy products in a way that reduces emissions.

The 2023 call has a budget of €10 million for two separate projects, each of which will be eligible to receive funding of up to €5 million. Tipperary county Council has selected the former Lisheen Mining site near Thurles as a bio economy centre based on available infrastructure such as energy and water supplies and the end of mining and peat extraction in the area contributing to job losses locally.
