Cathaoirleach of Tipperary Cahir Cashel Municipal District Cllr Declan Burgess, hosted a reception for 36 visitors from Austria at the Council Offices on Rosanna Road yesterday.  The group have been staying in Clonmel since Sunday July 16th and will return to Austria  on Sunday July 23rd. Desmond Doyle, a Clonmel man living in Austria for over 30 years arranges a number of visits to Ireland for people living in Austria – arranging accommodation, bus hire and itineraries in Ireland. The group completed a walking tour of the town, led by Mary Alice O’Connor  before visiting the Council offices and later visiting a local hostelry on Davis Street.

Tipperary town has been twinned with Mautern in Austria since 2005 and a number of the visitors in the Austrian Tour group are from Mautern.  Cllr Burgess presented the former Mayor of Mautern, Peter Stoltz with a framed print of Christ the  King and in turn the Austrian party presented a piece of pottery filled with  chocolates for the Cashel based Councillor. Both groups hope to deepen the ties between Tipperary town and Mautern in the coming years with the hope expressed that a group of adults or school children  from Tipperary might travel to Austria. Cllr Mary Hannigan Hourigan and Cllr John Crosse also attended the reception which ended with a rousing rendition of “It’s a long way to Tipperary” –  the anthem of the twinning project. Dave Carroll, Director of Services  attended to represent CEO Joe MacGrath.

The Tipperary Town Mautern Twinning Committee has 6 members: Chairperson Anna Tuohy Halligan, Mary Tuohy, Kitty Donovan, Kathleen O’Callaghan, Kathleen Prendergast and Mary Alice O’Connor-Long.
