Tipperary TD Michael Lowry is expressing confidence as to the future of long term residential care beds in Roscrea. The TD is confirming that the HSE National Development Plan for 2023 includes provision for the purchase of the Mount Carmel Nursing home and site subject to legal due diligence. The purchase is to be completed this year. Funding is also to be provided to refurbish and repurpose the existing Dean Maxwell Nursing Home to enable it to provide some aspect of elderly healthcare in the town as part of an overall service plan.

Long term beds will be provided by the purchase of the Mount Carmel complex. The TD says the convent will be vacated to provide extra bed capacity for residents and the entire facility will become a community care facility under the management of the HSE. Staff currently employed in Mount Carmel will come under the auspices of the HSE. This allows the retention of long term care beds in Roscrea in a unit that is fully compliant with HIQA standards.  Deputy Lowry says it is vital that residents can be accommodated in their own home town if they need accommodation in a nursing home.
