Investment in regional railway services is needed for north Tipperary according to the local branch of the Social Democrats.

The party is expressing disappointment that Irish Rail has no plans to automate 12 manned level crossings on the Ballybrophy-Nenagh-Limerick Railway line.

The information was released by Irish Rail  in response to  a parliamentary question raised by Social Democrats TD Róisín Shortall,

The Chair of the Tipperary Social Democrats, Brendan Guckian, says it is imperative that there is increased investment in rural public transport with the Ballybrophy-Nenagh-Limerick railway line offering a great opportunity to significantly enhance the availability of public transport in the north Tipperary region and strengthening links to Limerick and Dublin.

Currently, the line only operates two services each way, Monday to Saturday, between Ballybrophy and Limerick with a single service each way on Sunday. There is also a weekday morning service from Nenagh to Limerick. Mr Guckian says the timing and frequency of service needs to improve and investment is required to deliver the improvements.
