Tipperary Garda are encouraging drivers to protect themselves by always using their seatbelt and ensuring  that vehicle tyres are in good condition. Garda are also highlighting that failure to wear a seat belt can result in a €120 fine with 3 penalty points and possibly result in serious injuries or death in the event of a collision.  Garda say it is the responsibility of the driver and all passengers in a vehicle to ensure that they are properly buckled up before the vehicle is in motion. The driver also has the responsibility to ensure those under 18 years old are buckled up. The condition of tyres is also a safety issue according to An Garda Siochana. Drivers are reminded that the minimum tread depth required by law in the EU is 1.6mm. This is to ensure that the tyres have sufficient grip to keep the vehicle safe on the road. Driving with worn or damaged tyres is illegal and could result in a fine of €80 and 2 penalty points. The Garda advice is to regularly check the condition of tyres and have them replaced when necessary.
