Councillors In Thurles Approved Plans For N62/Slievenamon Road

Councillors in Thurles have unanimously approved amended plans for the N62/ Slievenamon Road. The €3M project to enhance the roadway and footpaths between Liberty Square and the shopping centre roundabout had been presented in a Part 8 planning process earlier this year. 14 submissions were received and the planning office did not agree to make any changes. Councillors refused to pass the Chief Executives Report on November 21st until concerns raised by some councillors and local businesses were addressed. At a special meeting of Thurles MD on Friday December 16th some changes were outlined which councillors said made them “happier,  not happy”.

Tipp Mid West Radio understands that the amendments are as follows –  paving stone similar to Liberty Square will be used on both footpaths near Liberty Square with the material transitioning to concrete(with a pattern) for most of the new wider footpaths, bollards under the control of the service station will be used instead of planters to restrict movement of customers vehicles, plans to restrict the flow of vehicles may see additional traffic on the rear laneway near the service station, two set down/delivery spots will be provided on both sides of the roadway to support retail,  a total of 5  parking spaces will be included on the roadway between Premier Meats and Town House Deli including one disabled parking spot, two set down spaces for customers will be provided outside the Deli with two more set down spaces available in the first two spaces outside the Garda Station, double yellow lines will be installed on  Kavanagh Place lane to regularise parking,  a feature displaying Thurles branding will be added to the area between the Garda Station and the shopping centre and finally measures will be taken to discourage parking on the  area opposite the shopping centre outside a local commercial office(formerly Doctor’s Practice). The project will see the roadway reduced to 6.5M in width and wider footpaths installed with a raised table junction at the corner of Na Fianna Road and Slievenamon Road. The changes are detailed in the blue text.
