People Should Exercise Caution At Lough Derg Amid Algal Bloom

468

Tipperary County Council is advising the public to exercise caution on Lough Derg due to the presence of Algal Bloom.

Algae blooms can occur when a combination of suitable environmental conditions exist for abundant algal growth (e.g., increased nutrients, warmer temperature, abundant light, and stable wind conditions).

Algal Bloom has been noted on Lough Derg in recent days.

The Blue green algae bloom can produce harmful toxins and is most easily recognised when it forms a bright pea-green paint like scum on or close to the shoreline.

People are cautioned that contact with the bloom should be avoided as it may cause skin irritation.

Those responsible for animals, especially dogs, are asked to keep their animals away from the affected area and to also ensure that animals have an alternative source of drinking water.
