The Labour party is demanding that the fuel allowance eligibility criteria be extended to offset the cost of living crisis without delay.

The party says the government plan to give an additional 3 weeks payment is to be welcomed there are many on low and fixed incomes that will not benefit.

The party is asking for the eligibility criteria for fuel allowance to be increased based on Building Energy Rating (BER) ratings.

Over half a million households would qualify and over 300,000 older people on fixed incomes will qualify.

The party also wants  a second band of eligibility for fuel allowance with the payment can be made at a half rate to assist people who are over the income threshold on the existing criteria but unable to afford to heat their home.
