Lowry Calls For Institutional Burials Bill

Tipperary TD Michael Lowry is calling for the Institutional Burials Bill 2022 which allows for exhumation and forensic examination of burial sites such as the Tuam Mother and Baby Home in addition to other locations to be passed and implemented without delay.

Supporting the Bill, he says that, while it is long overdue, it is the penultimate step towards providing answers to painful questions that have haunted hundreds of families for many years.

The Thurles based TD says it is difficult for someone not directly impacted to understand the pain of surfing of the victims and survivors of the Mother and baby homes.

Excavation of the site in Tuam is expected to begin late this year or early in 2023 and possibly also in other Mother and Baby Home sites such as Sean Ross Abbey in Roscrea.

Deputy Lowry also paid tribute to the work of historian Catherine Corless in revealing the numbers of children unaccounted for in Tuam home – with possibly 796 babies buried on site.
