Tipperary County Council figures for 2022 show a new-build target of 230 units between now and the end of the year.

The Council is optimistic that it can reach this target and points to the fact that is exceeded targets set out under the Rebuilding Ireland scheme for the period 2018-2021.

The Council’s target for that period was 625 units but it delivered a total of 840.

Tipperary County Council’s housing department has a total of 45 housing developments at various stages of completion across the county.

These will deliver a further 581 homes over the next three years.

However, demand for housing is difficult to match – there are currently 3,521 people on the approved housing list.

The breakdown of these numbers is as follows:

  • Tipperary/Cahir/Cashel: 840
  • Thurles Municipal District: 882
  • Nenagh Borough District: 729
  • Clonmel Borough District: 696
  • Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District: 374

The Council currently has 140 vacant houses on its books.

In 2021, 2,031 applications for social housing were processed by Tipperary County Council.

781 of these were deemed to be valid applications.

The council is also supporting 1,847 Housing Assistance Payments (HAP) recipients.

HAP is a system where financial aid is given to tenants renting from a private landlord.
