Concerns on reports of change of method of payment to Social Welfare recipients

A Co Tipperary councillor has said that a change in the way some social welfare recipients will receive their payments represents another attack on rural Ireland.

Sinn Fein’s Martin Browne was referring to reports that the Department of Social Protection is contacting social welfare recipients and telling them that they will no longer be paid in their local post offices, but will be paid through electronic transfer in banks instead.

He maintains that post offices rely heavily on facilitating these payments as they make up 30% of their weekly income in some cases.
He has called for the new arrangement to be stopped.
