1,141 false alarm calls were made to the fire services in Co. Tipperary between 2007 and 2011.
The figures were obtained by local Fine Gael TD and Junior Minister in the Department of Agriculture Tom Hayes.
Nationally the overall figure for a false alarm is over 32,000.
Of the false calls made in Co Tipperary, 347 were malicious hoax calls.
While South and North Tipperary County Councils have different charging structures which make it difficult to get a precise figure, South Tipperary County Council has indicated to Minister Hayes that it charges €450 per hour per emergency response for an alarm.
This he said outlines the drain these calls have on resources in the sector.
The Co. Tipperary TD has called for penalties to be put in place for repeat offenders. this he believes will act as a deterrent for repeat hoax calls which he says puts people’s lives at risk apart from proving costly to the emergency services
