Gardai, Irish Rail and the Rail Accident Investigation Unit have launched separate investigations after a nine year-old girl was hit by a train near Tipperary town yesterday evening.
The girl is believed to have made her way onto the track near Station Road shortly after 7 o’clock yesterday evening. She was hit by the 18.50 Limerick Junction/Waterford train.
She was taken to South Tipperary General Hospital where she remains in intensive care.
According to a spokesperson for Irish Rail, eight other people were on the train at the time. They were subsequently transferred to Waterford by bus.
The line was closed until 11pm.
Three investigations are now underway, involving gardai, the Rail Accident Investigation Unit and Irish Rail.
The girl is from Tipperary town.
