Gardai in Thurles are seeking the public’s help in relation to the theft of religious artifacts from Holycross Abbey on Tuesday, October 11th.
The theft happened at around 5 pm on the day in question after two men were seen walking towards the abbey with an angle grinder.
The relics, contained within foot-high crosses, one of which is said to be from the ‘True Cross’, were taken by the men who fled the scene in what is believed to be a wine or red VW Touareg jeep with a registration number of 06 OY or 06 LK. The jeep was later found around three miles away at Yellow Lough, burned out.
A dark coloured saloon car was seen in the area traveling at a high speed around the same time and gardai are appealing for anybody who may have seen either vehicle to contact them.
Thurles gardai can be contacted on (0504) 25100.
