The second of five flights carrying 500 Chernobyl children arrive into Ireland on Sunday as part of Chernobyl Children International (CCI) annual airlift of children.

The children coming form the heart of the contaminated Chernobyl Zone will be hosted by Irish families throughout Ireland, including Clonmel.

Many of the children making the trip come from very impoverished backgrounds in Belarus/Western Russia.

Research has shown that the children’s radiation levels drop bu 30-50% during their stay in Ireland.

Many of the children suffer from a variety of Chernobyl related illnesses and receive ongoing medical treatment while in Ireland

The arrival of this summer’s children brings the total number of children who have benefited under the scheme to over 22,000 since 1991
