Tributes Paid To First & Only Woman Cathaoirleach of the Seanad

The President and Taoiseach have led the tributes following the death of Clonmel woman Tras Honan.

President Higgins says Tras Honan was a proud Tipperary woman who broke many barriers in a long and distinguished career, notably as the first and only woman to be elected as Cathaoirleach of the Seanad.

Ms Honan’s  sister Carrie Acheson also served as a TD for Tipperary – Carrie Acheson died in January 2023.

Ms Honan  moved to live in Ennis in 1950 and became the first woman elected to Ennis District Council.

Tánaiste and Uachtarán Fhianna Fáil, Micheál Martin TD says he is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Ms Honan. Tras Honan was first elected to Seanad Éireann in 1977 and served as Senator until 1992.

Mr Martin offered his sympathies to Trás’s family, her son TV, her daughter Ann, brother Aidan and the wider Honan family.

Ms Honan died on November 25th, peacefully, in the loving care of the team in Kilbarry Care Centre, Waterford.  Predeceased by her husband Derry.

The funeral arrangements are as follows:

Reposing in Daly’s Mortuary Chapel, Francis St., Ennis, on Wednesday evening from 6pm to 7pm. Arriving for Funeral Mass on Thursday in St. Joseph’s Church at 10.30am with burial after in Drumcliffe Cemetery.
