Almost 2,000 pubs have closed across Ireland since 2005.  150 pubs closed their doors in county Tipperary, with 26 of these closures in the last year

Analysis of the sector shows the rate of decline in rural pubs has accelerated since the pandemic.  The sector representative body, Drinks Industry Group of Ireland( DIGI) is calling on the  Government to ease the cost burden on regional small and family-run businesses to ensure their sustainability by reducing Ireland’s high alcohol excise tax over the next two years.

Today’s report shows a 22.5% decline in the number of pubs in the State from 2005 to 2022 – this represents the closure of 1,937 Irish businesses. DIGI says the decrease sparks concern about the future sustainability of many other businesses in the industry.

The largest decrease was seen in Limerick with 32% less pubs in the county since 2005. Roscommon (30.3%), Cork (29.9%) and Laois (29.9%) saw the next largest decreases, with a further eight counties all showing the closure of more than a quarter including Tipperary with 28.6% less pubs since 2005.
