As the world Athletic Championships continue Ireland’s Ciara Mageean finished fourth in the 1,500 meters final. The athlete says she is disappointed to finish outside the medals as it was her goal for the Championships. Her time last night set a new national record time of 3:56.61.

The race was won by the heavy favourite, Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon, with Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji taking silver and Sifan Hassan from Holland in third – just .62 of a second a head of Mageean whose focus now turns to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Ireland has another medal contender in tonight’s final of the Women’s 400m. Rhasidat Adeleke, winner of a Canon Hayes National Sports Award in 2018 in Tipperary town, could become the first Irish athlete to win any medal at an outdoor global sprint event since Bob Tisdall won gold in the 400m hurdles at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles.
