Government Critised By Rural Independent Group Of TD’s For Failure To Deliver Adequate Housing Supply

The Rural Independent Group of TDs, led by Mattie McGrath, are accusing the Government, especially Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael of failing to deliver on promises of providing adequate housing supply for the people of Ireland.

Deputy McGrath noted that County Tipperary has 3,500 people on the current housing list and says the targets in the government’s Housing for All Strategy are not adequate in addition to not being achieved.

The Tipperary TD outlines that the Housing for All plan, with a target of building around 29,000 units this year and an average of 34,750 new homes annually until 2030, falls far short of the estimated need for around 50,000 homes per year until 2030, leaving Ireland 127,750 homes short of what officials in the Department of Finance acknowledge are required.

As the number of people in emergency accommodation is 12,422 Deputy McGrath claims that the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is  out of touch  with reality in claiming that Housing for All is working.

The Rural Independents  want the housing delivery targets revised upwards to be 50,000 units annually until 2030 and action to reduce construction costs by changing VAT rates on building materials and services and providing funding support to a person building  a one off house on their own land.
