Tipperary County Council have been asked to solve a problem it created in Ballyhurst between Tipperary Town and Golden.

Local councillor Michael Fitzgerald had requested that the council pipe and cover an open drain that was created by Tipperary County Council in response to a request from a family living on an adjacent property. Transport Infrastructure Ireland(TII) responded that the drain was not within what it considered the “safety zone” for which it has responsibility on the N74. Cllr Fitzgerald rejected that the open drain did not pose a safety hazard for vehicles on the road. At today’s Municipal District Meeting, Cllr Fitzgerald proposed that as the Council had opened the drain on the request of the family the council should now cover the drain with stones and cover this with soil if the TII refused to pipe and cover the drain. District Engineer James Swords says this action might be possible but funding for materials for the work would have to come from the Roads Capital Section. The drain is estimated to be between 200 – 250 metres in length.
