Rural Independent TD, Mattie McGrath has welcomed the announcement of a Garda investigation into the revelation that a senior investigator of the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) attended a private party at the residence of gangland crime boss, Gerry Hutch. Deputy McGrath says matter is deeply concerning as it raises serious questions about the integrity and credibility of GSOC.
The Independent Tipperary TD says the nature of the connection between the officer and Mr Hutch needs to be examined regardless of the investigators decision to resign from GSOC last week. Deputy McGrath says this is especially important as GSOC has been campaigning to have powers to pursue former Gardaí for wrongdoing after they retire from the force. The Garda National Bureau of Investigation was asked to investigate the matter yesterday after GSOC asked Commissioner Drew Harris to launch an investigation.
