Chefs are being invited to join a new peer-to-peer education group aimed designed to address food waste.

“Wasted” is supported by the Department of the Environment, Climate Action and Communications and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as part of the Circular Economy Innovation Grant Scheme.

At present, the Irish food service industry wastes over 200,000 tonnes of food each year, worth an estimated €300 million per annum.

The aim of “Wasted” is to create a network of informed and proactive chefs and food service teams advocating for zero-waste food initiatives.

An estimated one third of the world’s food supply is going to waste and research on climate action has identified reduced food waste as one of the top three climate solutions.

The programme will improve the food service operators financial performance but also contribute to a reduction in the use of resources to provide and transport food and reduce emissions from food waste as it degrades.
