An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, is to address the nation this evening with an outline of how Government plans to ease restrictions from next month, with strong indications that the announcement will give a very clear idea of the summer plan.

Optimism was prevalent among Government officials yesterday, as there were solid indications that the opening up of society will be quicker than previously thought, and tonight’s official address will include some positive surprises for the people of Ireland.

The following information has been indicated as the main points which will be announced by An Taoiseach tonight:

As of May 10th, people will be able to travel across the country, hairdressers will reopen for appointments, click-and-collect retail and team sports training will resume. Up to 50 people will be allowed attend religious services including weddings, funerals and masses. However, indoor wedding parties will remain capped at six guests and 15 for outdoor celebrations.

Three households can meet outdoors including in private gardens and a vaccinated household can meet an unvaccinated one indoors. This is to allow grandparents in particular to meet their extended families. Three vaccinated households can also meet indoors. Outdoor events with up to 15 people will be allowed from this date.

All construction workers will return to sites either on or before 10th May. On 17th May, all shops will be able to reopen and on 2nd June hotels and guesthouses will be open again. Outdoor hospitality – including restaurants and all pubs – will open on 7th June. Also on June 7th sports matches will resume, but no crowds will be allowed to attend.
