Residents Will Likely Have To Contribute To Local Road Resurfacing

Campaigners seeking the complete resurfacing of a local road may have to contribute to the costs of the works. The Roads section of Tipperary County Council have confirmed that the road in question – running from Rossadrehid Village to the Muskry Water Treatment Plan and Lake is a local tertiary road is unlikely to be included in the next 3 year round of road restoration works running between 2025-2027.

The Council advised the best option is to apply for road improvements under the Community Involvement Scheme. Under this scheme the Council provides 90% of the funding and residents pay 10% towards costs. Given that Irish Water and Coillte also use this road, it is considered feasible to ask them to contribute to part of the 10% costs. An estimated 15 residences are located on the road.

The scheme will open for applications later this year and in the meantime the area for works needs to be defined and the level of residence support for such an approach needs to be established.

Cllr Anne Marie Ryan has visited the area and says the roadway needs work as does another section leading from the Lake Muskry Trail head back to the main road.

The Tipperary Cahir Cashel District has delivered a lot of CIS road projects but she cautions that the scheme can be oversubscribed so there is no guarantee of an application being successful.

Cllr Ryan also expresses sympathy for members of the community faced with having to contribute directly to the costs of road maintenance.
