There has been a further increase in the number of people in emergency accommodation because they are homeless. The data released by the Department of Housing on Friday is for the month of May and shows that the overall total number of people in emergency accommodation is 15,747. This an increase of 167 compared to April. The number of adults (10,903) that are homeless is up by 98 and the number of children (4,844) is also up by 69. The report was released by the Department of Housing without comment by the Minister James Browne.
In county Tipperary the number of people in emergency accommodation for May is 74 – the same as for April this year. In county Limerick there is an increase of 9 persons -with 505 people now in emergency accommodation provided by Limerick County Council.
The total does not include those who may be sleeping rough, living in overcrowded or insecure conditions and people seeking international protection in Ireland that have not been offered any accommodation.
The Government which was elected in last November’s election confirmed last week that it’s updated housing strategy will now be published in September. It had been due for publication next month.
