Elected Representatives Notified About Reduction In Accommodation Centres Hosting People From Ukraine

Elected representatives in county Tipperary were notified yesterday about a reduction in the number of accommodation centres hosting people from Ukraine.

The Department’s statement identifies various reasons for the end of contracts with providers such as reduced need overall, some providers chose to end contracts or some compliance concerns exist, or rates could not be agreed. The changes may also be impacted by the completion of 82 new modular houses in Clonmel that were specifically constructed to accommodate refugees from Ukraine.

The notification from the Department reveals that 20 residents at Ballinacourty area will be relocated by July 7th, and four other locations in the county will cease to operate by July 31st. These involve 12 residents at Graham House(Cashel area), 15 at Kickham Lodge(Clonmel area), 4 at Mothel House(Clonmel area) and 55 at Sunflower House(Thurles area).

About 1,150 people are likely to be affected by a contract ending in 50 properties between now and the end of August across the country.  The residents will be given at least 30 days’ notice of their relocation. The Department also confirms that none of these properties have expressed an interest in providing accommodation to people seeking international protection, and the Department is not considering them for this use.

Other properties in Tipperary hosting Ukrainian refugees may also see a reduction or closure later this year.

Approximately 23,500 people are resident in about 670 State-supported Ukraine accommodation locations nationwide at present.  Approximately 420 contracts ended in 2024, involving over 15,000 beds.
