St John’s Famine Graveyard committee in Tipperary town is holding its street collection today

The Group is responsible for the ongoing maintenance of the historic burial ground and arrange Mass in the Cemetery on selected occasions. Staff on a Community Employment Scheme carry out the day to day work mowing the grass in the graveyard located in the Tipperary Hills area of the town.

Volunteers are accepting donations today at Dunnes Stores, at Supervalu, at the entrance to Market yard and at the Tipperary Credit Union building on Emmet Street.

The St John’s Famine Graveyard committee have been lobbying Tipperary County Council seeking funds for repairs to the footpath in the graveyard and are hopeful that dialogue that began over a year ago on this issue will soon deliver results. Cllr Anne Marie Ryan has asked that the Council’s Environment section with responsibility for burial grounds and the Roads section with responsibility for footpaths might find the necessary money estimated at less than €30,000.

Mass will be held in St John’s Famine Graveyard on Tuesday June 24th at 7.30pm and all are welcome. Those attending are advised to bring a seat for the religious ceremony.
