L-R Former Mayor and Cllr Tom Wood – Cashel Person of the Year 2025, Cllr Declan Burgess Cathaoirleach Tipperary County Council, Maria O’Dwyer Infrastructure Delivery Director, Cliff Cope Cashel Tidy Towns.
Uisce Eireann reports that Cashel is set to enjoy a more secure and reliable water supply as the company recently completed their latest upgrade project in the town, replacing over 750 metres of aged cast iron water mains with new modern pipes.
The works, which took place between Cathal Brugha Street and Lacey Square, will improve the reliability of the town’s water supply while also reducing high levels of leakage in the area. In addition to these works, the company also recently replaced 300 metres of water mains between the junction of Rock Lane and Moor Lane. Shareridge completed both projects on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County Council Cllr Declan Burgess was on hand to mark the official completion of Uisce Éireann’s water mains replacement project in Cashel. Cllr Burgess adds that “Reliable infrastructure is critical to the future of towns like Cashel and this investment will bring lasting benefits to the local community.”
Uisce Eireann’s Infrastructure Delivery Director Maria O’Dwyer, a native of Cashel, recognises the importance of continuing to invest in critical infrastructure and notes that 7km of water main pipes were successfully replaced in 2024, more than 18km has been completed so far this year, with over 13km of water main currently under construction and almost 17.5km to be upgraded over the coming months across Tipperary.
Leakage reduction works taking place in 2025 include 7.9km of water mains that are currently being replaced between Ballinard and Killenaule, 6.2km of water mains being replaced between Thomastown and Ballymacaddy, 1.7km of water mains being replaced in Carrick-on-Suir, while a further 5.6km of water main is set to be replaced between Ballypatrick and Kylanoreashy.
Identifying and repairing these leaks will help Uisce Éireann to achieve a 2030 goal of a national leakage rate of 25%. The leakage rate stood at 46% in 2018.
