Contracts for the next stage of the Cahir Town Regeneration project were signed on June 12th by Cathaoirleach Cllr Declan Burgess.
The projects are part of the larger project but are vital to the improved economic performance of Cahir according to Cllr Andy Moloney. Rathcabbin Tarmacadam, Roscrea are to install a surface on a new Public Car park on the site of the former Castle Court Hotel/Galtee Hotel providing parking for over 80 cars including disabled parking bays and parking for 5 coaches and EV charging infrastructure. Mulcahy Construction are to begin work on the area beside the Market House to install a pedestrian route between the new car park and the town Square.
The Market House is to be renovated to become a Business Centre which will occur after the Granary Building on the Cashel Road is revamped to create a state of the art Library in Cahir. At present the Library is housed in the Market House. The contract for the Library project is expected to go to tender in September.
The project will be concluded when the layout of the Square in Cahir is renovated to change the parking options and flow of traffic (late 2026). The Square layout will be flexible and may function in different ways at different times of the year with more space for outdoor dining in the summer months. Castle street will also be upgraded and a new roundabout is to be trailed at the junction of the N24/Castle Street. Planning permission for all elements are in place.
The Cahir Town Centre Regeneration Strategy is being funded in large part by the Rural Regeneration Development Fund with over €12M allocated to Cahir with Tipperary County Council providing approximately €3M to the project.
Cahir Castle expects to have over 90,000 visitors this year, an increase compared to last year’s 87,343. In addition, the Swiss Cottage, St Declan’s walking trail linking Cashel and Ardmore in Waterford and additional time allocated in Cahir for visitors from Cruise ships in Waterford/Cobh are all driving the town’s economic success.
