Efforts to Revitalise Muintir Na Tire are the focus of a Summer Open Day at Canon Hayes House in Tipperary Town on Saturday(12 noon – 3.30pm). The organisation appointed a new CEO in January, Rosie Palmer from County Laois. In recent years Ms Palmer had worked as Parliamentary assistant in Leinster House with Senator Pippa Hackett and is deeply committed to community and local services. Muintir na Tire promotes it’s activities via it’s website Muintir.ie and via social media on Facebook on Muintir Na Tire.

The organisation was established in Tipperary in 1937 by the late Canon John Hayes and now provides a sophisticated Community Alert Service and operates a number of Community Employment Schemes throughout the country. A special Mass is planned for 10.30am on Saturday Morning in the Church of the Annunciation, Bansha where Canon Hayes is buried having served as Parish Priest. Seats on the Community bus to Bansha and returning to Tipperary town on Saturday morning can be booked by calling 062 51163 or emailing [email protected]  Pick up points are St. Anne’s Secondary School at 9.55am and Supervalu at 10.05am.

Canon Hayes House, on Rosanna Road, Tipperary town, is the focus between noon and 3.30pm where visitors can view memorabilia from the organisation’s history and learn about the rural electrification project so heavily promoted by Canon Hayes. Refreshments and music are also included along with a visit by the RTE Nationwide Team who are preparing a programme for October about the 40-year history of the Community Alert Service.  Tipperary town man Martin Quinn is a former National President of Muintir na Tire and says that it is very important to remember Canon Hayes and his legacy describing Canon Hayes as “a Champion of Rural Ireland.”
