Updated designs for the N24 Cahir to Limerick Junction & Oola Transport Project which is identified as a priority investment in the Government’s National Development Plan 2021-2030 have been published today.
The plans which will affect many landowners in the route corridor may directly affect the homes of 5 residents in the area. The project is to be submitted to an Bord Pleanála in the next phase likely later this year or in early 2026 – the Bord, in granting planning permission would also be granting Compulsory Purchase Orders for the lands needed to construct the road.
The details released today show the provision of roads, roundabouts, junctions and active travel components to enable walking and cycling. Direct active travel links between built-up areas along the Project will encourage modal shift, the use of sustainable forms of transport and inter-modal connectivity. The Road Component includes three new streets within Tipperary town, namely Knockanrawley Street, Brodeen Street and Lake Road and these streets will provide for enhanced connectivity and facilitate active travel. The new road is 37km in length and will be a mix of road types – some will be single carriageway in each direction, some will be Type 3 Divided Road with 2 lanes in one direction and one lane in the other direction and some will be a Type 2 divided road with 2 lanes in both directions. The route will include 9 roundabouts between the Oola Junction and the point where it joins the M8.
The Project is expected to have a positive impact on the attractiveness of public transport by providing greater journey time savings and catering for an enhanced more reliable bus service between the cities of Limerick and Waterford. The transport solution will provide improved connectivity to Limerick Junction Railway Station and the potential Strategic Freight Terminal and Transport Hub identified in the Tipperary County Development Plan where all modes of transport can interchange.
