Tipperary University Hospital in Clonmel is seeking planning permission for an extension to the existing building.
The planning application seeks permission for a three storey extension to the hospital and temporary accommodation. The proposed extension includes Emergency Department waiting area, triage rooms, offices, plant room and ancillary staff facilities. The proposed site is within the confines of a protected structure.
The hospital has recently expanded by building a corridor link to the former St Michael’s unit to provide an additional 30 beds. This building had previously been used to provide acute psychiatric services which were ended in 2012 and patients now receive this care in Kilkenny or Ennis hospitals. Modular units have also been added to the building to provide extra bed capacity in the past. Overcrowding at the Emergency Department is a frequent occurrence with trolley numbers typically ranging from zero to twenty – there are 12 admitted patients on trolleys at Tipperary University Hospital in Clonmel today out of a national total of 399.
