Preparations Continue In Kilmallock For Saturday’s 2025 National Famine Commemoration Event

Preparations are continuing in Kilmallock Saturday’s 2025 National Famine Commemoration event.  The President Michael D Higgins, the Mayor of Limerick John Moran and Minster Patrick O’Donovan will attend.  Each year a different county hosts the Commemoration which was held in Ballingarry county Tipperary in 2017.

The event will take place in Kilmallock Famine Memorial Park which is located within the historic Kilmallock Union Workhouse complex and is in remembrance of all those who suffered or perished during the Famine. In addition to the formal wreath laying ceremony, there will be a number of musical performances and readings involving local artists, school children and the Army Band. President Higgins will also unveil a memorial plaque.  The event is being hosted by Limerick City and County Council and tickets which are available free of charge are required for admission. The event is scheduled to commence at 11.15am and to conclude by 1.15pm. The Commemoration will be broadcast by RTE News Now online.
