The Minister for Housing James Browne has published figures showing nationally that 2,357 vacant social homes were brought back into active use in 2024 under the Voids Programme.

Vacant Social houses are known as “voids” and the Voids Programme provides funding that supports local authorities in preparing vacant homes for re-letting and helps to tackle vacancy and dereliction to ensure vacant properties are re-used for housing.

In county Tipperary, 88 such vacant properties were brought back into use in 2024 – slightly lower than the 100 re-let in 2023.

Minister Browne says this is actually a positive sign – reflecting Tipperary County Council’s shift towards a “planned maintenance model” which leads to quicker repairs, continuous use, and faster re-letting of social homes.

The latest data on social housing in the county shows that there were 100 social homes vacant as of the end of March – 27 in the Tipperary Cashel Cahir Municipal District(MD), 25 in the Templemore Thurles MD, 19 in Carrick on Suir MD, 15 in Clonmel and 14 in Nenagh.

Overall, in the last ten years, 1,105 social homes in Tipperary have been brought back in use under the Voids Programme.

Since 2020, the government has spent almost €190 million to return 13,177 homes to active use.
