Tipperary county councillors are being asked to approve a new Burial Ground Development Policy at today’s meeting. The council currently manages or assists with  242 burial grounds  in the county, some in use and some that are historical in nature. The draft policy circulated in advance of today’s meeting highlights the increasing pressure on the Council to provide and fund the maintenance of Burial Grounds. The Council’s Revenue Budget for 2024 has assigned a figure of €994,230 for the operation and maintenance of burial grounds. This includes minor improvements, maintenance grants and caretakers’ fees.

The Council has set out it’s priorities  for the next 3 years with new burial grounds to be provided in the parishes of Solohead and Oola, New Inn and Knockgraffon and Cashel in West Tipperary, in addition to new burial grounds in  Puckane, Carrick on  Suir and Borrisoleigh.   The Council also notes that land is less likely to be donated as in the the past and says a much more expensive process must be followed in assessing if the land is suitable for use as a burial ground such as soil and flooding analysis and other environmental studies..

Today’s meeting is being held in Clonmel with a 10am start time.
