Tipperary Fire Service attended a fire at the Tipperary Town Allotments yesterday evening.

Two of the Garden sheds belonging to plot holders were destroyed in the fire.  A bank, close to the entrance also suffered burn damage as did some of the hedgerow in the South East corner. No injuries are reported from the incident and investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Fire damage is evident  in several areas of the Allotments in Carrowclough. There have been previous incidents of people dumping and  burning rubbish on the site which has an unused area with no soil.

The site is owned by Tipperary County council. It is understood that the Council is working with a number of stakeholders to bring a new tenant onto the site in addition to the plot holders. The new tenant, a local community group in need of a new base, may establish a compound on the unused gravel area just inside the entrance. It is hoped that this higher level of activity may reduce the illegal dumping on the site. Approximately  28 of the 40 plots in the facility are in active use. ]
