Tipperary County Council is granting planning permission for a single storey McDonalds Driv Thru Restaurant in Thurles.

The grant of permission comes with 15 conditions. The hours of operation will not be 24 hours per day but restricted to operating between 6am and 10pm. The intended site is in Clongour, adjacent to the N62 and also adjacent to the road that is to be extended to form the Thurles Inner Relief Road. The Council also ordered that the lighting be restricted to reduce the light scatter outside the boundaries of the site and for all cabling to be underground. Conditions regarding signage, water runoff, ventilation systems, type of fencing, impact of construction on adjacent trees on the River Walk and noise were also imposed.

28 submissions had been made by members of the public raising a range of issues from the impact of such business in the largely residential area, to traffic concerns, litter, impact on the adjacent river walk, potential for anti-social behaviour, obesity and whether a Drive Thru business was compatible with the Thurles Local Area Plan which seeks to reduce car dependency. The grant of permission may be appealed to An Bord Pleanála within the next four weeks.  The Development levy imposed is €10,5333. Full details can be viewed on the Council website at this link here.
