Gardaí in Thurles have arrested a man in connection with incidents of criminal damage to four retail premises in Liberty Square last night. Garda say the man in custody is aged in his 50s and was detained under the Mental Health Act 2001. He is currently receiving medical treatment and is understood to live locally.
CCTV footage from an adjacent premises shows a man with a sledgehammer hitting the plate glass windows. A total of four premises were targeted. Two that are well established and two that new business that opened in the last year. The businesses involved were the Mobile Tek and PC Repair, Your Stop Thurles, Roma Fish and Chips and Treasure Box. There was no attempt made to steal anything in the attack that took place around 3am. Images shared online today show the door and window frames of one premises covered in plastic and tape while the glass in the other 3 premises is badly damaged but did not fully collapse.
