Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County Council Councillor Declan Burgess is repeating a previous call for a CCTV scheme in Cashel.
The local Fine Gael councillor is pressing the Director of Services, Sharon Kennedy, to implement such a scheme in the town as he believes it could be a prompt and effective solution for the Wallers Lot area where there are frequent reports of anti-social behaviour and multiple reports of stones being thrown at cars. Cllr Burgess says CCTV “could tackle ongoing animal welfare issues and anti-social behaviour incidents in the area.”
Tipperary county council is to roll out CCTV schemes in Littleton and Borrisokane this year. Such schemes are onerous to put in place as they must comply with GDPR regulations, chain of custody rules to ensure the footage can be used in a criminal case and be approved by the Garda Commissioner Drew Harris. There have been further delays because the Council does not have a line of funding in place to fund repairs and updates to any system it might install – the Department of Justice does provide a grant to assist with the cost of installing a CCTV system.
The Council approved a new CCTV Policy (adopted January 2024) which will allow funding to be set aside but it may be several years before all areas in county Tipperary seeking schemes can have one installed.
