33 projects in county Tipperary are to receive funding under the Government’s Built Heritage Investment Schemes. The Scheme is available annually and a total of €8.1m in grant funding is allocated for conservation and protection of architectural heritage throughout the country with €365,000 of this larger amount allocated to Tipperary projects. The largest award in the county is €37,500 for the former County Gaol and Governors house in Nenagh.
8 projects in West Tipperary were successful – St Mary’s Church Tipperary town secured €10,000 for repairs to windows and doors, the owner of 17 – 19 Main St(St Vincent’s building) secured €10,000 also for windows/doors and associated elements, the old school in Dundrum secured €6,000, the Church in Clonoulty receives €8,000 while St John the Baptist Church in Cashel secured €25,000, Ballinahow House secured €3,000, Ballybrado house near Cahir €7,000 and Suir Mills at Barnora, Cahir €18,000.
The scheme supports property owners to conserve and enhance historic buildings and streetscapes, and at the same time preserve and develop traditional building skills. In addition to the funding provided under the scheme, owners and custodians will themselves commit an estimated €29.5m to these projects from their own resources.
€21,377 in thatch funding assistance will be shared equally between 3 projects in Tipperary located in Ballycommon, Ballyporeen and Ardfinnan.
