Thurles Municipal District is to implement a new set of Parking Byelaws on May 1st this year. The Bye laws will affect parking in the towns of Thurles, Roscrea and Templemore.
The Draft Bye laws are now available for inspection until March 12th at the Council office in Thurles and on the council website – submissions may be made no later than 4.30pm on Tuesday 25th March 2025. Submissions received will be taken into consideration before the byelaws are finalised.
Under the proposals the on street parking fee in Thurles will be set at €1 per hour and at 50 cents per hour in Roscrea and Templemore with a maximum permitted stay of 2 hours. All Day parking in Thurles will only be available in the back zone of Parnell Street car park and in the Former Munster Hotel Car park and the Friar Street Car parks at a rate of €3 per day. The draft bye laws will also ban parking on Parnell Street, Thurles except for spaces adjacent to Stakelums office supplies. Under the new bye laws there are a range of different parking time limits – with 3 spots on Liberty Square having a 30 minute limit – near Frank Roches, near Linnanes Carry Out and near Hickeys Pharmacy and the spaces adjacent to Stakelums on Parnell Street
In certain areas residents or students attending TUS or MIC Universities can obtain a Parking Permit – no such permits will be issued for Liberty Square.
Councillors in Thurles approved a plan last year for the Enhancement of the West End of Liberty Square that includes the removal of 14 parking spaces at the request of Transport Infrastructure Ireland on safety grounds. Traders in the town had sought the retention of the parking spaces.
