The CEO of Tipperary County Council Sinead Carr and the Cathaoirleach, Cllr Declan Burgess, are to travel to New York for the St Patrick’s Day parade as guests of the Tipperary Association in New York.

The matter went to a vote at yesterday’s council meeting as some Councillors such as Seamus Morris objected to the cost involved and suggested instead that the funds be donated to UNWRA – the United Nations Relief Agency assisting Palestinians.

The vast majority of Councillors felt the Irish Diaspora would be disappointed if the Tipperary delegation did not travel and that despite concerns about the Trump Administration the trip offered opportunities to build links that could be economically  beneficial to Tipperary.

The St Patrick’s Day Parade, first held in New York in 1762, will take place along Fifth Avenue in the heart of the city with an estimated 100,000 participants and an attendance estimated at over 1 million people.
