Tipperary Sinn Féin councillors Annemarie Ryan and David Dunne have welcomed the recent decision by the Ceann Comhairle that the Regional Group cannot form an opposition technical group in Dáil Éireann. The local Councillors are now calling on the Government to ensure that the leaders of Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil deal with speaking time and committee positions in the spirit of the Ceann Comhairle’s findings and for the Regional Independents Group to be treated in the same way as their government colleagues.

The councillors say the decision by the Ceann Comhairle has finally vindicated the opposition’s stance that independent government TDs cannot be in government and opposition at the same time and go on to accuse Fianna Fail and Fine Gael and the Regional Independent Group led by North Tipperary TD Michael Lowry of attempting  to dilute the ability of the opposition to hold the Government to account. South Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath who recently joined the group led by Deputy Lowry recently says he is not ruling out legal action to ensure Dáil speaking time for members of the Group.

The Dáil is to resume today with time set aside at 2.55pm for statements about the impact of Storm Éowyn.
